I keep hearing about parents not potty training their children until the children are ready, which seems to be between five and eight, instead of two to three like was previously accepted. Unfortunately this is not true for the schools. Most school districts still require that children are potty trained by the time then enter Kindergarten.
I don't know why thats such a big deal? If kids are still wearing diapers in school, they will be able to pay attention to more, without being distracted by their bodies. So what if they need to be changed over so often?
I recently read about a girl, Beth's age who became incontinent due to a car accident. Her school district told her parents that she would have to either, be enrolled in their Special Eduction classroom, or go back to preschool until she can be potty trained again. Is that not the most idiotic thing you've ever heard? How hard is it to accommodate her disability without compromising her eduction? While they fought the school, they enrolled their daughter at a local daycare/preschool, and because she was "not potty trained" due to her disability, she had to be put with the toddlers, so her diapers could be changed regularly. The girl was regularly seen being pushed in the large six or eight seat strollers with the other toddlers. She regularly had a pacifier in her mouth while in public, due to her being fussy. She was fed her meals in a highchair, and had to nap in a crib.
Now, you can say that I have done the same to Beth, and other kids her age, at the Church nursery, but that was because their parents had asked for that, or it was the traditions of our parish. I don't think its fair to subject a child to be treated like a baby, when its not their fault, and did nothing wrong.
I hope that they can get the accommodations she needs.
